Agriaware Incredible Edibles Project
Fourth Class children in Sacred Heart School, Portlaoise have been awarded first place for their participation in the Incredible Edibles project organised nationally by Agriaware. This project involved 2500 schools and over 120000 children. Their prize included 1200 towards the creation of a school garden and a visit from the Agriaware Mobile Farm to the school. The children have been participating in the project since February. The project involved growing 5 fruit and vegetables including lettuce, cabbage, potato, strawberry and scallion. The children maintained a growth diary and participated in lots of additional activities including soil analysis, cookery, art, film making, creative writing, science, history of vegetables, music and dance SPHE and IT. The children really enjoyed the project, parents say that their attitude towards eating fruit and veg has changed for the better. The children attended an awards ceremony in UCD on Thursday 25th June, hosted by Darragh McCollough of Ear to the Ground fame, attended by Mairead Lavery, Chairman of Agriaware and Minister of State for Food and Horticulture, Trevor Sargent TD. The children were treated to a fabulous ceremony, entertainment was provided by each class and a wide range of incredibly healthy and tasty food was provided for all.
