On July 3rd 1825, Srs. Magdalen Breen, de Chantal Wilmerding and Angela Mooney founded the Presentation Convent, Portlaoise beside the new Parish Church, which had just been completed. The new church had cellars which were used as the first classrooms. The Sisters managed to make them comfortable for 216 girls who flocked to them on the first day of school at the end of August. These girls came from the town and the country. Some of the pupils were fourteen years old. Later when additional rooms were available, three year olds were admitted. The school was not finished until 1844.
